Nizioł / Sałajczyk / The Many Shades of Violin Expression - NOSPR
Nizioł / Sałajczyk / The Many Shades of Violin Expression
When composing his Sonata in A minor in 1885, Ignacy Jan Paderewski was already moving within the circles of distinguished musicians, although his international career as a pianist was only about to begin. He dedicated the piece to Pablo Sarasate, but even that was not enough to keep it from sinking into oblivion. Today, however, the Sonata is performed again as it is difficult to deny it its melodic appeal and dramatic flair – reminding us of a moment when Wieniawski’s dazzling virtuosity was already a thing of the past.
Karol Szymanowski’s Romance of 1910, written in late-Romantic fashion, reveals the young composer’s inclination towards modernity and the emergence of his personal style. Even at this stage, Szymanowski was already drawn to the sensual colours of French impressionism, epitomised by Debussy. Yet Debussy’s Violin Sonata of 1917 is imbued less with sensuality than with the terror of the Great War. By contrast, Gershwin’s Three Preludes announce a new era, shaped by the influences of jazz and popular music.
