Natalia Kukulska – Czy ona jest taka jak ja? / Anniversary Tour
Natalia Kukulska is celebrating her anniversaries on song. This autumn, she takes the stage at some of Poland’s finest concert halls on a tour titled Czy ona jest taka jak ja? (‘Is She Like Me?’) tour.
The main one is that 30 years have now passed since the release of Światło, her debut album as an adult artist. Her first album, Natalia, recorded when she was a child, was released 40 years ago, while Natalia herself is celebrating her 50th birthday.
Natalia Kukulska is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable artists on the Polish music scene. Her standing is unquestioned. She has recorded 15 solo albums, with combined sales of more than one million copies, and has received dozens of awards and distinctions. She has performed on major stages both in Poland and around the world. She is an icon – an artist who defies convention, embraces challenges and experimentation, and remains true to herself. In doing so, she has successfully maintained her position as one of the most important figures in Polish culture for many years.
Although she is not usually inclined to look back on her career, she has decided to make an exception for this year’s triple anniversary. As she herself puts it: ‘The anniversary tour is a celebration for me, and I would like to invite everyone who has listened to my music at any point along the way – from my early years as a child performer, through the 1990s and right up to the present day, including Czułe struny. It does not matter when they discovered my music. I was wary of the word ‘anniversary’, because it implies a kind of summing-up… But why not look back on everything that has happened with gratitude? It is the purest feeling.’
Kukulska promises that on the Czy ona jest taka jak ja? (‘Is She Like Me?’) tour she will revisit, with both perspective and affection, songs she has not performed live for years but which have remained favourites with her audiences. This retrospective and nostalgic yet energetic musical encounter will also bring an entirely new artistic quality. Natalia will be joined on stage by the outstanding musicians with whom she has performed for many years. The expanded line-up and collaboration with the Atom String Quartet will give the tour a new musical dimension, bringing a sense of space and elegance to the concerts as well as a fresh perspective on familiar compositions.
Audiences will hear songs from the landmark albums that shaped the sensibilities of an entire generation around the turn of the millennium, foremost among them Puls. Natalia will also revisit Sexi Flexi, an album that brought an entirely new quality to the Polish music scene, as well as Czułe struny, hailed as one of the biggest productions in the history of the Polish recording industry. Nor will she overlook the songs she has performed over the years for Disney animations and feature films. The icing on the anniversary cake will be a playful nod to Natalia’s childhood hits, which earned her the first platinum record in the history of the Polish recording industry.
An important element of the project is its deliberate evocation of the heady 1990s – from the visuals and details of the stage design to archival material and memories of a time when Natalia, as in 1997, was winning the country’s most important music awards and was one of the decade’s pop-culture icons.
‘I want this concert to feel fresh, but also to envelop you in nostalgia and move you… I want it to glow with the energy and passion that still make my pulse race. And to be infused with the humour that helps me keep things in perspective. To welcome my audience, I am bringing together the finest musical ingredients – wonderful musicians and singers… and I am adding strings to the line-up too… with a few tricks of my own up my sleeve! All seasoned with specially designed sets and archival material. I want everyone to have their own moment of connection with me… something personal. Is she like me? That Natalia who made her debut as a child 40 years ago… the one who, 30 years ago, wanted to break free from her childhood image by switching on the Światło (‘Light’)… or the 50-year-old who is now setting out on this tour in pursuit of another dream. A collector of memories on the road to Dobrostan (‘Well-being’)…’
