NOSPR Chamber Musicians / Sałajczyk / Biegas / Krzeszowiec / Lato / Zambrzycki / The Secret Garden of Eugeniusz Knapik
Celebrating his seventy-fifth birthday this year, Eugeniusz Knapik remains, in his approach to extra-musical ideas, very much an heir to Gustav Mahler. He is drawn more to ideas than to programme music, as is evident both in Islands for string orchestra, which reflects on transience, solitude and the irreversible passage of time, and in Tha’ Munnot Waste No Time for three (or two) pianos and clarinet. The latter work, in particular, is rich in interpretative possibilities. It invites associations ranging from the great pianism of the 20th century – echoes of Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, Ligeti’s Monument, and birdsong in the manner of Messiaen – to a cantilena Romantic in spirit, an instrumental song that reaches deep into the human soul. Its title, meanwhile, is taken from a chapter of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, a novel written primarily for young readers yet carrying a universal message – much like Knapik’s music. And just as every reader finds their own way into the novel's hidden garden, each listener will discover their own key to the work’s hidden meanings.
