Stabrawa / Tarcholik / Jadamus / Threesome Singing
Two violins and a viola form an unusual combination. With their similar colour and range, one might expect their sound to feel narrow, even impoverished. But in the hands of the right composer, it is anything but. Antonín Dvořák wrote the Terzetto for the sheer joy of making music with friends, imagining himself on the viola alongside two fellow violinists. The work bears the hallmarks of the Czech composer: lyrical melodies shaped with the character of folk song, tinged with a touch of sentimentality. Yet the piece proved too demanding for one of the intended musicians, prompting Dvořák to compose a second cycle, the Miniatures – easier to play, but all the more beguiling. Mieczysław Wajnberg’s Sonata adds to the programme a refinement that evokes both Bach and Shostakovich, while Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade infuses the Central European melting pot with a distinctive Hungarian spirit.
