NOSPR Brass Ensemble / Brass and Brilliance
What would film music be without the brass? Brass instruments create a sense of space, heighten the impact of dramatic moments, underscore lyrical passages and send shivers down the spine. Every cinema-goer knows this instinctively – and wind-band arrangements of John Williams’ and Hans Zimmer’s scores for superhero films can amplify those sensations even further. More in the tradition of the classic big bands is Otto M. Schwarz’s Last Call, while Edward Gregson's Fanfare for a New Era showcases a brass sound rooted in the legacy of the Romantic symphony. The hymn-like character of the works by Kevin Houben and Steven Verhelst, together with Jan Koetsier’s musical language, firmly rooted in neoclassicism, completes this richly varied portrait of what the modern wind orchestra is capable of.
