AUKSO x Wania x Pietrzko / Bach Goes Electronic
Must Johann Sebastian Bach’s works be played on acoustic instruments? History suggests otherwise. Experiments with the Baroque master’s music have a long pedigree: in the 1960s, Wendy Carlos famously recorded the Brandenburg Concerto No 3 on a Moog synthesiser, and her groundbreaking album Switched-On Bach revolutionised perceptions of classical music in the context of electronics. In Poland, the idea of transferring Bach’s works into the electronic sphere appeared with an unusual project in 2013, when producer Filip Berkowicz decided to bring together two pianists Marcin Masecki and Piotr Orzechowski – on electronic pianos – and Capella Cracoviensis, an ensemble specialising in early music. This tradition of musical experimentation will also be continued at the upcoming NOSPR concert, when outstanding Polish jazz pianists Kasia Pietrzko and Dominik Wania will perform as soloists with the AUKSO string orchestra. Not only will the artists interpret the works of the Leipzig cantor anew but also remind us that improvisation, today associated primarily with jazz, used to constitute an important element of performance practice in the Baroque era.
