Marek Moś - NOSPR

An eminent Polish conductor, violinist and chamber musician. Founder and artistic director of the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy, and director of the AUKSODRONE festival.

He studied in Bytom and Katowice under Kazimierz Dębicki and Andrzej Grabiec.

He founded the Silesian String Quartet and served as its leader for many years. The ensemble quickly established itself as one of Europe’s finest string quartets. With the Quartet, he performed at prestigious festivals and leading concert venues around the world, including Konzerthaus in Vienna, Concertgebouw and IJsbreker in Amsterdam, Vredenburg in Utrecht, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, deSingel in Antwerp, Merkin Hall in New York and Jordan Hall in Boston. With the Silesian String Quartet, he gave the world premieres of several dozen works by Polish and international composers, the vast majority of which were dedicated to the ensemble.

Drawing on his broad musical horizons and openness to new experiences, he has led one of Europe’s finest chamber orchestras for more than 20 years. With AUKSO, he performs contemporary, film, jazz and popular music, with a particular affinity for works that cross the boundaries between genres. Yet he is equally at home in the classical repertoire, as demonstrated by his performances of the complete Beethoven symphonies and Haydn’s London symphonies. He also takes part in projects that expand the very notion of orchestral music. He has performed with leading figures in Polish electroacoustic music, including Stefan Wesołowski, Jacaszek and DJ Lenar, and international electronic music artists such as Squarepusher and Mira Calix. He has also collaborated with Aphex Twin and Jonny Greenwood. Together with AUKSO, he is frequently invited to interpret works by jazz musicians. He has enjoyed longstanding collaborations with Leszek Możdżer and Michał Urbaniak, and has performed with Tomasz Stańko, Andrzej Jagodziński and Maciej Obara. He has also shared the stage with popular music artists such as Voo Voo and Zakopower.

He has conducted orchestras in Poland and abroad, including the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra and Ensemble Modern. His conducting engagements have taken him to countries across Europe, Asia and South America, and more recently to North America, where he appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York in a concert entitled Głosy Gór (Voices of the Mountains). He has performed at Poland’s leading contemporary music festivals, including Sacrum Profanum in Kraków, Warsaw Autumn and the Festival of Premieres: Polish Modern Music in Katowice.

The precision and attention to detail that characterise AUKSO’s performances under his baton have earned recognition not only in the concert hall but also in the recording studio. Together with the Tychy-based orchestra, he recorded works by Polish composers for the Polish Music Publishing House’s 100 for 100: Musical Decades of Freedom project. He has recorded film scores by Wojciech Kilar, Elliot Goldenthal, Jonny Greenwood, David Buckley, David Kitay, Paweł Mykietyn and Maciej Zieliński. Recordings featuring Marek Moś have been released by labels including Nonesuch, EMI Classics, Anaklasis, DUX, BeArTon and CD Accord.

Marek Moś has received numerous awards and distinctions, including prizes at the Contemporary Music Competition in Kraków and the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris, the Polish Composers’ Union Award, the Coryphaeus of Polish Music Awards, the Silver Medal for Merit to Polish Culture – Gloria Artis, the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship Award and several Fryderyk Awards. In 2009, he was granted honorary citizenship of the City of Tychy.
