The Power of Brass: from Elgar to Piazzolla - NOSPR
The Power of Brass: from Elgar to Piazzolla
Wind orchestras can be associated with mining culture and eclectic repertoires. However, when played by musicians from NOSPR, let's turn towards the classics. We'll find here the typical signal and fanfare sounds characteristic of wind instrumentation, marked by Krzysztof Penderecki's individual style, but also extraordinary colors and dance associations in the Suite from Maria de Buenos Aires – Astor Piazzolla's operatic tango that surreally captures the brutal culture and myth of the Argentine metropolis. Steven Verhelst's arrangement envelopes this music in a sentimental mist.
In Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, he playfully sketches portraits of his friends and loved ones. Each character gazes individually upon the same musical material. Wind instruments are known for their distinct characters, so we can expect diversity – even if the original figures in the work are completely unfamiliar to us.
