{oh!} Essence / Pastuszka / In Tribute to Master Corelli: Armonico Tributo
Anyone familiar with Arcangelo Corelli’s violin sonatas should also discover those of Georg Muffat. A true Baroque cosmopolitan, Muffat knew exactly where to go in search of the finest compositional traditions. He mastered the craft in Paris, travelled on to Prague, Vienna and Salzburg, and further honed his skills in Italy. It was there that he met Corelli and immediately became his admirer. From each journey he brought back new musical experiences, weaving them into his own works by skilfully combining the various musical styles then competing across Europe.
His five sonatas from the collection Armonico Tributo, published in Salzburg in 1682, are scored for two violins, two violas and basso continuo. Like Corelli’s sonatas, they alternate slow and fast movements, many of which draw on dance models. Muffat also delights in contrapuntal display: the third movement of the Sonata in G major is a fugue, while the same sonata concludes with a Passacaglia, providing a magnificent conclusion to the concert.
