NOSPR Chamber Music / Percussion Group / The Melody of Rhythm
For centuries, rhythm in classical music served primarily to support the expressive shape of a phrase or the natural prosody of language. It often reinforced the dance character of melody. In the 20th century, however, the influence of non-European cultures and the omnipresence of popular culture liberated this musical parameter from such constraints. The social revolutions of the era also played their part, for rhythm is closely bound to bodily expression and releases emotions that people were once expected to keep hidden.
Opening our chamber music season, Nebojša Jovan Živković’s Trio per Uno will sweep us away with its energy from the very first bars. The pulsing rhythms of Steve Reich’s Mallet Quartet will set in motion the characteristic interplay between hearing and memory found in minimal music, while Mark Ford will follow a similar path in Stubernic. In Ney Rosauro’s Mitos Brasileiros, mythical creatures from the depths of the Amazon rainforest will draw us into the dance. Finally, Andrew Beall's Rancho Jubilee, scored for three cajóns, will bring the ultimate liberation of pure rhythm.
