Maksymiuk / NOSPR / Poranek noworoczny
A familiar anecdote about the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Niels Bohr recounts that a horseshoe was hung above the entrance to his home for good fortune. A visitor asked incredulously whether the eminent scientist truly believed in that superstition. 'Of course not,' the physicist replied. Then he added: 'But I am told it works even when one doesn't believe in it.'
Much the same can be said of certain musical traditions, whose accumulated weight becomes apparent each year with the arrival of the New Year and carnival season. While watching the broadcast of the New Year’s Concert from Vienna, experienced music lovers may justifiably doubt whether the greatest conductors and the celebrated orchestra truly feel any artistic fulfilment when performing, once again, the same waltzes and polkas. And does the audience never weary of starting yet another year to the unchanging round of the same melodies and rhythms?
To the sceptics and malcontents we say, quite straightforwardly: come to the New Year’s Morning Concert at the NOSPR. See for yourselves that this music, on this occasion, works perfectly every time and brings sheer joy. Especially as the programme, alongside the greatest hits, contains several hidden gems. And, as if this were not enough, we shall meet not only the best of New Year tradition, but also a genuine musical legend – Jerzy Maksymiuk. This remarkable artist, the artistic director of our orchestra half a century ago, will appear in a double role: as the conductor and as the composer of one of the several waltzes featured in the concert programme.
Szymon Maliszewski
Concert duration (intermission included): approximately 90 minutes
