Kam / Duś / Every Colour of the Clarinet / This concert forms part of the European Clarinet Congress.
The clarinet – younger than many of its orchestral companions, having emerged only in the 18th century – won listeners’ hearts with its distinctive veiled timbre. It can be so beguiling that it rivals the violin, for which Clara Schumann originally wrote her Three Romances. The point is beautifully illustrated by the Romance of Princess Marie Elisabeth of the royal House of Wettin, herself an admirer of Brahms’ music. Bright, almost dazzling colours and the instrument’s ability to swing were discovered by the neoclassicists Jean Françaix and Francis Poulenc. And Witold Lutosławski reminds us that the clarinet is also a folk instrument, one that plays for dancing.
