New Music Orchestra / Bywalec / Craft Music - NOSPR
New Music Orchestra / Bywalec / Craft Music
We rarely think of art today – sound art included – in terms of craftsmanship. Yet the finest works of contemporary music, and the masterly performances they receive, could never come into being without knowledge accumulated over decades, unique individual experience, and memory trained to the limits of human possibility – not only abstract memory, but muscle memory as well.
It is hardly surprising, then, that Krzysztof Wołek dedicated his new work Bonds and Unions to genuine craftspeople, to the ‘hypnotic acts of virtuosity and efficiency’ that shape their daily work, and to the ethos of a community united by labour. Paweł Hendrich, in turn, has chosen to translate into sound the phenomenon of the true musical manufactory that the New Music Orchestra has represented over the past thirty years. We will first hear portraits of the ensemble's individual members, followed by a portrait of the ensemble as a whole. To conclude the concert: a classic of New Music and a masterpiece of spectral craftsmanship in sound – Tristan Murail’s Désintégrations.
