AUKSO x Shannon / Green Is the Colour
The Celts inhabited the lands of present-day Poland long before the birth of Christ. Judging by the international success and unmistakable sound of Shannon, one might think they never left this part of Europe. Giving hundreds of concerts across the continent every year (perhaps least frequently in Poland), the ensemble is regarded by connoisseurs of Irish – and, more broadly, Celtic – music as one of the most compelling exponents of its contemporary evolution. ‘What has Dublin to do with Katowice?’ one might ask. Quite a lot, in fact. Countless American musical genres have Celtic roots and, by extension, so does much of today’s popular music. It was also the Scots and the Irish who, in the mid-20th century, were among the first to show that experimenting with tradition could become a path towards the future (after all, who among us has never listened to Clannad?), and in doing so inspired, among other things, the emergence of Polish folk music (the thoroughly Slavic Kwartet Jorgi, after all, began its career in the 1980s playing Irish tunes). So perhaps, in musical terms at least, we are all a little bit Celtic.
