NOSPR Chamber Music / A Tribute to Great Artists
In March 2027, we will mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death. To commemorate the occasion, the season’s programme features numerous works by the composer, alongside music inspired by his legacy. This is not the first time that Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa has drawn on Beethoven's music. In her two string quintets, she created structures related to those of his Seventh and Fourth Symphonies, from their overall design to their narrative gestures. She has based her new Quintet on the structure of the Second Symphony.
Gordon Jacob’s Sextet for wind instruments and piano was composed in 1956 and dedicated to the memory of the distinguished horn player Aubrey Brain. Jacob encoded his name into the musical fabric of the work. Shortly after its première, Dennis Brain, Aubrey's son and himself an outstanding horn player, was killed in a car accident. Today, the work commemorates them both – father and son.
