Sound Walks - NOSPR
Season 26/27
Sound Walks

Throughout the season, whatever the time of year or the weather, our ‘Sound Walks’ will reveal some of NOSPR’s secrets and take you to places that are normally off limits to concertgoers.
Can a building in which a symphony orchestra performs become an instrument in its own right? If so, what does an empty concert hall sound like when there are no musicians in it? How far will the sound of a clap or a finger snap travel, and what happens if we fill the hall with the steady rhythm of stamping feet? Will we hear a whisper from far away? And what will the orchestra sound like when we eavesdrop on it ‘behind the scenes’, from the backstage area?
We invite school groups on a unique journey through the home of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice – a place where architecture meets music and silence matters just as much as sound.
‘Sound Walks’ are much more than a conventional guided tour. They are an interactive journey through one of Europe’s finest concert halls, during which we will explore the secrets of acoustics and the materials that absorb and reflect sound, and explain why a concert hall ‘hears’ differently from an ordinary room.
This is an invitation to those who want not only to listen to music, but also to understand how it is created – including through the space in which it resonates.
