Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment - NOSPR

Encounters with the world's leading early music ensembles are an integral part of the Lenten and Easter season at NOSPR. This year, the Orchestra and Choir of the Age of Enlightenment return to Katowice, where they will perform Bach's St John Passion.

The text of the Gospel according to St John differs somewhat from the other three Gospels, in which Jesus’ suffering sometimes takes on a deeply human dimension. John’s account places much greater emphasis on the Messiah’s divine nature, offering more contemplation and metaphysical symbolism.

Interestingly, Bach’s dramatic design brings out quite different aspects of the story. It is the St John Passion that is rich in theatrical gestures, dramatic tension and contrasts. Its narrative is more concentrated and direct, though it is no less rich in deeply moving arias and expressive chorales.
