New Music Orchestra / Bywalec / Reorienting the Salon
In an age increasingly sensitive to the issue of cultural appropriation, is it still permissible to compress the music of the entire world into a two-hour cycle for salon orchestra? Only if you are a composer of Mauricio Kagel’s erudition and breadth of perspective. A descendant of Eastern European Jews, born in Buenos Aires, a leading figure of the post-war German avant-garde – but above all, a master of juggling stylistic and semantic codes. In this selection from the eight Pieces of the Compass Rose, we will hear Andean panpipes, ragtime and touches of klezmer music. Interestingly, the Argentinian composer views the musical map from a perspective far from obvious to a Polish audience: for him, the North-East is the universe of Latin American culture, the South-East the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and the South-West lies in Chile.
