Metropolis Piano Quartet / The Piano in Good Company
The piano quartet is a relatively rare genre in classical music. Mozart’s two works set an almost impossibly high standard. Before them, instruments in works for similar forces were not treated as equal partners. Mozart combined the technical demands of the piano concerto with the close-knit ensemble playing characteristic of the string quartet. His Piano Quartet in G minor, KV 478 also possesses a wonderful lyrical quality. At the time, Mozart was working on Le nozze di Figaro, and melodies seemed to flow effortlessly from his pen.
Richard Strauss’ Piano Quartet in C minor brings to a close the period of his youthful fascination with the chamber music of Brahms. Strauss infuses the genre’s seriousness with his own love of drama and powerful passions. Meanwhile, in his miniature Café 2010, the French composer Karol Beffa looks as much to the Mozartian tradition as to the tangos of Piazzolla...
