NOSPR Chamber Musicians / Not Only Chopin
The works presented in this concert demonstrate that 19th-century Polish music, despite a certain lag in relation to European trends, conceals many compositions of brilliance, wit, and lasting appeal. The late-classical Septet of 1830 written by Józef Elsner (1769–1854) reveals the composer’s experience from his years directing opera at the Warsaw National Theatre. The work contains both dramatic streak and catchy melodies of distinctly national character.
At that time, Elsner’s student was Józef Krogulski (1815–1842), a prodigy often described as the “Polish Mozart,” a gifted pianist who composed within an aesthetic similar to that of his master yet enriched it with the fashionable virtuosity of the affected brillant style. Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński (1807–1867), another of Elsner’s pupils, drew more decisively upon the Romantic aesthetic. His Sextet aligns with the principal current of chamber music of his era.
