NOSPR Chamber Music / Kędra / Jawor / Kurzac-Kotula / Music Is a Woman
Clara Schumann served as a role model for the virtuosas and women composers of her time. Matching – and at times even surpassing – her husband’s fame, she heroically balanced family responsibilities and caring for the ailing Robert with an international performing career and her own creative work. Their work as composers was deeply intertwined: Clara’s brilliant Trio in G minor, Op. 17 clearly served as the model for Robert’s Trio in D minor, Op. 63, written the following year. It is also often regarded as the finest work composed by a woman in the 19th century – though in this case, the criteria are, of course, relative.
Although thirty-eight years younger than Clara, Cécile Chaminade was barred by her father’s decision from studying at the Paris Conservatoire. Nevertheless, she went on to build an international career, and her Piano Trio No. 2 in A minor is an outstanding example of late Romantic French chamber music, equal in quality to the works of her male contemporaries.
