Camerata Silesia / Szostak / Requiem of Light - NOSPR

For more than forty years, John Rutter’s Requiem has remained one of the contemporary choral works most frequently chosen for performance. The composer wrote it after the death of his father, giving the work a deeply personal character. Rutter himself emphasised that he wanted to create music his father would have enjoyed listening to. Another source of inspiration was Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, the manuscript of which Rutter studied at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris in the mid-1980s. It was there that his vision of a contemporary requiem was born – one filled with light and consolation. Instead of the monumental drama associated with the requiems of Berlioz, Verdi and Britten, Rutter offers music imbued with inner peace. Its transparent structure and captivating melodies have helped the work quickly gain worldwide popularity.
