AUKSO / Tango, the Love of My Life
Fervent and emotionally charged, the tango is most often associated with Argentina, yet it also has a rich Polish tradition. It is believed that the operetta actress and dancer Lucyna Messal, who had studied its intricacies in Paris, introduced the dance to Poland. Her performance with Józef Redo in the operetta Leányvásár (Girls’ Market) in 1913 is regarded as the first tango presentation in our country. From its earliest appearances, the Argentine dance enjoyed exceptional popularity in Poland, with a veritable boom occurring during the interwar period. In that time alone, approximately four thousand tangos were recorded! The genre reigned in cabarets and was performed by the leading stars of the day. Everyone wrote tangos, including those primarily associated with classical music, such as Andrzej Panufnik, Mieczysław Mierzejewski, and Feliks Rybicki.
This tradition will be revisited in the concert Tango, the Love of My Life by the AUKSO orchestra together with distinguished guest artists. The programme will feature some of the most beautiful Polish tangos from the 1920s and 1930s in arrangements by Hadrian Filip Tabęcki. A contemporary element will also be present in the form of Lejdistango from the film Lejdis, alongside the celebrated Mexican song Bésame mucho. The evening promises a sequence of timeless melodies!
