First performed in 1876, Richard Wagner’s monumental music drama Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) consists of four independent parts and spans well over a dozen hours of music in total. One of the most ambitious works in the operatic repertoire, it demands exceptional stamina and artistry from singers and orchestra alike, as well as considerable concentration, patience, and time from audiences. In today’s fast-paced world, such conditions are increasingly difficult to attain, and thus only the most devoted enthusiasts are able to fully appreciate this remarkable achievement of Wagner’s compositional genius.
The distinguished American conductor Lorin Maazel, however, sought to make The Ring more accessible and engaging to audiences unaccustomed to multi-hour musical marathons. His 1988 orchestral compilation, Der Ring ohne Worte (The Ring Without Words), may be described as a selection of those passages from the drama that are most compelling in symphonic terms and capable of forming a distinctive musical narrative that encapsulates the entire story of the Nibelungs and the house of Wotan. Lasting approximately seventy to eighty minutes, this compilation – or suite – includes all the principal musical moments while omitting the vocal parts, thereby allowing the work to be presented within a single concert evening.
