Researchers are defering a final verdict on whether the “Introduction, Theme and Variations” – one of the most spectacular works in the clarinet repertoire – came from Rossini's pen at all. Either Rossini resorted to the method of recycling his own work, common at the time, or someone else made use of his invention, masterfully transfering the essence of Italian bel canto into the possibilities of the clarinet. In terms of style, melody, harmonic solutions and overall orchestral colour, Bizet's youthful symphony is illusively reminiscent of Gounod's Symphony No. 1, and yet it is more gripping than the master's composition. “Variations on a theme of Haydn” went down in history as Brahms's first fully mature symphonic work and an extraordinary tribute to the great classicist. Only later did it come out that the melody Brahms chose as the theme for further transformations had nothing in common with the work of Haydn. The paths of inspiration of some works can be winding – but this in no way diminishes their originality.
