NOSPR Chamber Musicians / Virtuosos of the Double Bass - NOSPR
NOSPR Chamber Musicians / Virtuosos of the Double Bass
We know these artists from the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, but today they will entertain us in a uniform ensemble of double basses. Given their stage personalities, we may be certain they will sweep us along with the energy of Sarasate’s Gypsy Melodies, the operatic brilliance of Bizet’s Carmen or the sensuous nostalgia of Piazzolla’s Oblivion. Daryl Runswick’s delightfully humorous Strauss in the Doghouse will lend a carnival spirit to the programme, which also includes a more serious contribution of vital importance for double bass quartet literature, written in 1942 by Swiss composer Joseph Lauber for the Berlin Philharmonic. The historical circumstances of its origin may not be the happiest, but the music itself is original and subtle. Finally, Mahler’s Urlicht reminds us that no orchestral magic is possible without the double bass.
