Beethoven's Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 acquired its nickname from Carl Czerny, who associated its second movement with the apparition of Hamlet’s father’s ghost in Shakespeare’s play. The atmosphere of this movement seems to foreshadow the Romantic fascination with the supernatural. We know that while working on the trio, Beethoven was considering writing an opera based on another of Shakespeare’s plays – Macbeth. The unsettling Largo is framed by the two more dynamic outer movements, making its singular depth all the more compelling.

Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120, written when the composer was eighty, is regarded as one of his finest achievements in chamber music. Compared with his earlier works, full of Romantic tension, the Piano Trio in D minor speaks in a more subdued voice. Melancholy is joined here by serenitas – serenity of spirit, the inner peace that comes with old age. So much can be said sotto voce...
