JazzKLUB / Rudi Mahall's Almost Danish Quartet / Standards with a Playful Twist
What would happen if one of the more audacious free jazz artists took on jazz standards? This concert offers the opportunity to find out. Rudi Mahall, a Berlin-based bass clarinettist, is renowned for his original and bold approach to the instrument as well as for his highly individual sound. He was once on the path to becoming a classical musician, but curiosity led him towards contemporary music and improvisation, where he found his true calling. By the 1990s, he was already celebrated for a style that combined fearless exploration with a lively sense of humour. Now, with his not-quite-Danish quartet (featuring Polish pianist Artur Tuźnik), Mahall steps into the world of jazz standards as one might enter a toy shop. He plays with old structures using his unbridled imagination and ignoring all conventional models. Instead, he relies on his remarkable temperament and wit to reinvent the familiar.
