The reputation of a music competition may be measured by its publicity, the value of its prizes, or the number of participants. For the audience (and history) the decisive factor is rather how often the jury’s verdicts prove accurate in the reality of musical life. In this respect, the Jazz Juniors panel has rarely been mistaken. Tomasz Chyła, Quantum Trio, and Jakub Paulski are only a few examples of laureates from the past decade, while the complete list of winners over the competition’s 48-year history constitutes a chronicle of Polish – and indeed international – jazz. In the golden age of jazz, the greatest figures, Davis and Coltrane among them, would go to clubs to hear younger musicians, well aware that within their music one could already discern the jazz of the future.
