Massive clouds of sound, yet also filigree sound structures. Untamed musical wildness, yet also elegant refinement. With Modulaire, Emil Miszk has achieved the impossible: bringing together musicians from six countries, several generations and widely differing approaches to jazz and improvisation within a project of striking conceptual unity. The ensemble’s artistic credo – ‘the conviction that a band need not be built around a single dominant narrative’ – has truly been realised. The programme recorded on the album Megalopolis is simply outstanding. This music does not ask for the listener’s attention – it commands it from the very first moment. And while listening to Miszk’s orchestra, one cannot help imagining the greats – Gil Evans, George Russell and Carla Bley – smiling somewhere in the hereafter.
