Trio Fontes / Baroque à la française
In the five suites that make up Pièces de clavecin en Concert, Jean-Philippe Rameau drew musical portraits of the remarkable personalities, character traits and places of his time. The cycle embodies the very essence of French Baroque chamber music while also offering a gallery of miniature musical portraits and landscapes, infused with wit and refined elegance.
In one of these works, Rameau portrays the great viola da gamba virtuoso Marin Marais – and the portrait is surprisingly cheerful for a master of introspective melancholy. Following convention, the Suite en sol brings together dances of various character, revealing the full expressive potential of the viola da gamba, an instrument largely forgotten for the next two centuries. The programme is completed by two sonatas by Jean-Marie Leclair, founder of the French violin school. One features a magnificent dialogue between violin and viola da gamba; the other displays violin virtuosity at its most dazzling.
