Rather than styles or historical periods, it is different ways of thinking about the organ that shape the programme of Jan Liebermann’s recital in Katowice. An instrument burdened with centuries of stereotypes reveals strikingly different facets here. With equal ease, it gives voice both to Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Passacaglia in C minor, BWV 582, in which each successive variation unfolds like a rhetorical statement of ever greater expressive depth, and to the graceful Air from the Orchestral Suite in D major, BWV 1068 – a tale of almost fragile delicacy. In Alfred Hollins’ brilliant Concert Overture in C minor, the organ becomes an instrument of dazzling virtuosity; in the musical landscapes of Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s Seven Pastels from Lake Constance, Op. 96, it becomes a palette of subtle sonic impressions. Finally, the arrangement of Bach’s Trio Sonata in C major, BWV 529, demonstrates how effectively chamber music can be realised by a single performer at the organ console, while the transcription of Richard Wagner’s overture to Tannhäuser proves that an entire symphony orchestra can be contained within the organ.
