Hanna Dys / Szymon Zawodny / The Sound That Stirs the Imagination
At first glance, the combination of organ and saxophone may appear unconventional. Yet when they sound together, their voices blend in a natural harmony: the organ’s – monumental, with an almost limitless palette of colours; the saxophone’s – born out of human breath, expressive and warm. Their harmonious timbre opens a new musical context and stirs the imagination. The concert programme leads listeners through a spectrum of idioms and emotions, from mythological references and soundscapes to the energy of dance. In Szymon Zawodny’s cycle Postcards from Poland, four miniatures will unfold, each richly detailed and evocative. A more contemplative dimension will emerge in The Sky is Blue and White by Anna Rocławska-Musiałczyk, inspired by a Finnish folk melody. Then the hall will fill with the pulsating rhythm and dance energy of Ezpata Dantza for solo organ, in which the composer of French and Lebanese origin Naji Hakim references the titular sword dance from the Basque Country. The concert will conclude with Paul Creston’s virtuosic Suite for organ – classical in form yet modern in its musical language.
