JazzKLUB / Raphael Rogiński / A Very Different Coltrane - NOSPR

Whether he is playing Bach, Kurpie folk music or the music of the Jewish diaspora from around the world, Rogiński always remains himself. That is not to say that the music he chooses to explore is of little consequence – quite the opposite. Here, he removes John Coltrane’s compositions from their jazz context, an act of considerable courage that nevertheless preserves the Coltranean spirit. Too often, Trane’s muscular, demanding music turns, in successive reinterpretations, into a sporting discipline – a race over harmonic hurdles. Rogiński refuses to enter that race; he has no desire to become a harmonic athlete. We already have more than enough literal interpretations. Instead, Rogiński approaches Coltrane’s classic compositions – Equinox and Lonnie's Lament, among them – with respect and affection for the originals, even as he transforms them almost beyond recognition. More than half a century after they were written, the Polish guitarist has discovered in them something that even Coltrane himself could not yet have heard in the 1960s.
