Melodramas of new sounds - NOSPR
Melodramas of new sounds
Residing in Vienna, composer Grzegorz Pieniek unveils the curtain to a world of entirely new sounds in his new Accordion Concerto. He has been doing this with the New Music Orchestra for many years - in joint projects, they have met repeatedly: at the Festival of Prapremieres, Polonica Nova, and they have also performed at the Konzerthaus in Vienna. The concerto was commissioned four years ago, but due to specific difficulties in its execution, it will come to fruition now. Primarily due to the special instrument - the quarter-tone accordion, custom-built. In fact, in this situation, we can say that not just a piece was composed for the instrument, but... an instrument was created for the piece.
About the second composition, Richard Ayres himself says: "I think the best way to describe it is as a melodrama. It combines many topics that fascinate me: the relationship between textual and musical narrative, the history of opera, early cinema, 19th-century theatrical practices, as well as folk and popular music of the Alpine region. As in any respectable melodrama, text and music come together to present a grand theatrical adventure, starting from solitary existence, scenes of village life and unrequited love, ending with an expedition, the outcome of which spells failure."
