Music is never entirely static. Even when it seems perfectly calm, something beneath the surface is often constantly pulsing, circling, stirring. Composers can make time speed up or slow down, build tension from a single rhythm, or make a mighty orchestra sound as light as a chamber ensemble. This concert offers an opportunity to explore energy – the force that sets music in motion.
Karol Szymanowski and Antonín Dvořák both draw on forms associated with dance, but do so in entirely different ways. In Nocturne and Tarantella, tranquillity is only temporary. The nocturnal atmosphere gradually intensifies before giving way in the finale to a spirited Italian tarantella, whose rhythm seems to sweep the entire orchestra along with it. Dvořák, in turn, constantly plays with the listener’s expectations in his Scherzo capriccioso. The music changes direction, speeds up, slows down and surprises us with one idea after another, revealing the many faces of orchestral virtuosity.
The organ will be another protagonist of the concert – an instrument impressive not only in its sheer size, but also in the extraordinary range of its capabilities. In Horatio Parker’s Organ Concerto, it becomes a fascinating partner to the orchestra, at times blending into the symphonic sound and at others rising above it with a power that few, if any, other instruments can match.
This concert shows us that music engages not only our imagination, but also our bodies. Rhythm can quicken our breathing, powerful chords can quite literally make us tremble, while silence can be every bit as important and overwhelming as the loudest climax.
The concert is intended for pupils in grades 7–8 of primary school and secondary-school students.
Admission is free.
