Leonkoro Quartet / Change is Coming
Two Beethoven masterpieces trace their composer's artistic journey over the course of just twenty-five years. The String Quartet in C minor belongs to Beethoven’s first set of quartets – Classical in form and continuing the tradition established by Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven, however, reinforces this form with contrasts that create tensions of far greater dramatic force. The choice of C minor – the key of the ‘Pathétique’Sonata and, later, the Fifth Symphony – lends itself this effect.
In the String Quartet in C sharp minor, Beethoven expands the traditional four-movement structure into seven movements performed attaca. This is no longer a matter of creating musical moods by means of established techniques enriched with his own invention. It is an attempt to convey a deeper, more reflective musical message. The guiding principle becomes an inner interplay with the listener’s emotions, rather than merely with ingrained habits of listening. A new era in thinking about music begins.
