A careful listener will easily realise that Mozart wrote his Quintet in G minor in the heat of work on “Don Giovanni”. This is one of Wolfgang Amadeus's six string quintets, though he planned more – for his favourite ensemble in the form of a quartet augmented by a second viola. Korngold's Suite makes an exceptionally interesting pair with K. 516 – this unusual quartet for two violins, cello and piano for left hand is clearly neo-classical in its form, yet at the same time seduces with its “modern” eclecticism, characteristic of the composer: the brilliance of the themes development, the astringent dissonances, the lyricism of the melody combined with the insistent element of rhythm. The Viennese classic and its modernist avatar – still rarely present on our stages.
