His lyrics are sharp and uncompromising, yet although references to hip-hop are not foreign to him, they lack the direct anger of the American street. His message is carefully crafted and belongs to the great jazz tradition of social engagement, from Billie Holiday and Nina Simone to Esperanza Spalding.
