JazzKLUB / Mary Halvorson – Canis Major / Woman Who Masters the Improvised Guitar
Mary Halvorson returns to Katowice with her latest project, Canis Major. The quartet, composed of her long-time collaborators, will present the leader's new compositions. On the one hand, she is an outstanding improviser and one of the most interesting guitarists of our era, whose natural need is to experiment and push boundaries. She treats her instrument with complete openness, which allows her to play in an unconventional way. On the other hand, as a former student and later stage partner of Anthony Braxton, she is an ambitious composer attentive to the structural integrity of her works. Open to many musical traditions and aesthetics, she remains in constant artistic exploration. Her distinctive fusion of composed material with improvisation consistently produces fresh and unexpected sonic landscapes. It is no exaggeration when critics say, ‘no one plays like her, no one writes music like her’.
