Diversity and multiculturalism. These two words perfectly capture both saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and her music. Raised in a New York neighbourhood home to a large Dominican community, she naturally gravitated first towards Latin music. She first came to wider attention with an album devoted to the music of Alice and John Coltrane. Her 2023 release Phoenix earned her three Grammy nominations and a Jazz Journalists Association Award. She has performed alongside giants of jazz (Clark Terry, Reggie Workman), soul and R&B (Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots). Her latest album, We Dream, features an all-star line-up including Chris Potter, Terence Blanchard, Hiromi, Bilal, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah and Kassa Overall. Lakecia Benjamin captivates audiences both through her music and through her distinctive stage persona.
