Put simply, Medeski is too good to play only with others. The catch is that the very greatest—John Zorn foremost among them—usually want only him. And with good reason. Medeski shares responsibility for the success and all twenty-three albums of Medeski, Martin & Wood, the trio that found a new way of bringing together jazz, groove and the avant-garde. Much of that success is due to Medeski himself, one of today's greatest masters of the Hammond organ, the Wurlitzer, the Clavinet and countless other keyboard instruments. But what will happen when we strip everything back and place nothing more than a fine piano before such an outstanding improviser and versatile artist? In his musical library, the pianist has virtually everything at his fingertips: wild experiments, hypnotic grooves, and a deep jazz love for Oscar Peterson and Thelonious Monk. Which is why he offers one simple warning: musically, absolutely anything can happen!
