Might this expanded incarnation of Acoustic Unity be regarded as a compact version of Nilssen’s celebrated Supersonic Orchestra? The percussionist has mastered the rare art of creating music that is simultaneously innovative and compelling for audiences, and he applies this gift in both of his flagship ensembles. The music abounds in memorable melodies, inflections of Africa, but also thrilling madness in both solo and collective parts. The expanded frontline of three saxophones gives the band all the firepower it could need. Yet, while the leader does not shy away from the subtle colouring often associated with the Nordic sound (he is Norwegian, after all), one thing is certain: when the time feels right, he will turn his drum kit in less an instrument and more of a locomotive, and the band will transform into a roaring jazz express hurtling down the tracks.
