ECHO Rising Stars Festival / Pejčić / Cello Alone
We do not often have the opportunity to hear the cello entirely on its own. In chamber music, like most other instruments, it most often appears alongside the piano or as part of a larger ensemble. Yet the solo repertoire for the instrument stretches back centuries. Even without reaching as far as its distinguished predecessor, the viola da gamba, it is enough to recall Johann Sebastian Bach’s sublime Cello Suites, which prove that, sometimes, the cello alone is more than enough.
In Petar Pejčić’s programme, early works enter into dialogue with more recent compositions, foremost among them György Ligeti’s outstanding Sonata. Đuro Živković’s The Icon, inspired by the visions of the Byzantine mystic Saint Symeon the New Theologian, was written especially for the young Serbian cellist. A religious thread also runs through Ernest Bloch's music, while Ana Sokolović’s and Giovanni Sollima’s works offer dazzling displays of contemporary virtuosity.
