The monumental Ciaccona (or Chaconne) from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita No. 2 in D minor for solo violin – a series of variations built on a simple harmonic structure – has come to be regarded as one of humanity’s great masterpieces. Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann: ‘For a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings.’ In 2011, Kaija Saariaho composed the cycle Frises on a commission from the violinist Richard Schmoucler. The great Finnish composer begins the work with the note on which Bach’s Ciaccona ends, creating a contemporary response enriched by electronics. Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonatas for solo violin are a 20th-century response to Bach’s complete cycle of sonatas and partitas. The concert will show how a new work by the distinguished Swedish composer Anders Hillborg finds its place within that lineage.
