ECHO Rising Stars Festival / Martínez / Martí Duran / Jarell / A Baroque Playlist
Baroque songs are often much like today's popular songs: they have simple structures and memorable melodies. Many tell of the torments of love in the distinctive language of the period, as in Claudio Monteverdi's famous Si dolce è il tormento or Francesca Caccini's Se muove. Today, Il primo libro delle musiche, the only collection of works by Francesca Caccini, composer at the Medici court, is increasingly regarded as a kind of musical and poetic autobiography. The stories of Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi are remarkable examples of women artists' successful struggle for recognition in a society unfavourable to independent women.
Alongside Italian music, we will also hear songs from England (Henry Purcell) and Spain (Juan Hidalgo). In each of these countries, the song developed its own distinctive character. It will be fascinating to hear how a new song by the Catalan singer and composer Anna Campmany finds its place within this programme.
