NOSPR Chamber ensembles / Mendelssohn-Bartholdy & Brahms
The last decade of Mendelssohn’s short life was a particularly intensive one. In late autumn of 1844, the composer decided to take a break from his duties in Berlin, London and Leipzig, finding a moment of peace in Frankfurt. It was there, during the “happy days”, that the String Quintet No. 2 was composed. The composer was not particularly satisfied with the work himself. The mature expression of the piece only found recognition after Mendelssohn’s death – contrary to Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2, which had been intended to be the master’s final work. Fortunately, it did not exhaust his powers of invention. The excellent reception of the 1890 premiere encouraged Brahms to return to the creative path, and it is this return that we are indebted to for his several late masterpieces.
