Kaleidoscope / Birdsong - NOSPR

Birds, regarded as one of the most colourful and intriguing elements of the natural world, are highly regarded and admired singers. From ancient times to the present day, they have inspired the imagination of many of us, and composers have been particularly eager to draw on their songs. Their voices and artistry, so often a source of wonder, solace or simple curiosity, have frequently become an integral part of musical works – whether as quotations, attempts at imitation or themes for improvisation.

Works of this kind will feature in the May concert of the Kaleidoscope series, performed on the harpsichord and piano – instruments exceptionally well suited to the intricacies of birdsong. We will also hear stories about two of the best-known singers of the natural world – the nightingale and the cuckoo – as well as about instruments with rich and remarkable histories. And we do not mean only the two instruments already mentioned – the piano and its ancestor, the harpsichord – but also instruments built specifically to reproduce birdsong as faithfully as possible: whistles of many different kinds made by François Morel, who has been fascinated by birdsong since childhood and is now a renowned maker of sound-imitating instruments.
