The opera Le roi d'Ys did not make it into the repertoire, although it could be dubbed at least intriguing. Lalo framed the story, based on the legend of the ‘Breton Atlantis’, with Wagner-inspired music. It sounds splendid, although it is no mean feat to guess the composer’s name only by listening to it. It is quite the contrary in the case of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, in which he contained a reminiscence of his earlier works. If we wanted to select a piece most representative for the Czech composer, it would be the much beloved Concerto indeed.
