NOSPR / New Year's Concert
As Clara Schumann wrote about her husband’s Cello Concerto, ‘The Romantic quality, the vivacity, the freshness and humour, also the highly interesting interweaving of violoncello and orchestra are indeed wholly ravishing, and what euphony and deep feeling one finds in all the melodic passages!’ In 1839 she expressed the opinion that her husband’s imagination far exceeded the capacities of the piano and that his compositions were clearly suffused with an orchestral character. Two years later, in a burst of creative inspiration, Schumann would write two symphonies, the Fantasy for piano and orchestra and the Overture, Scherzo and Finale. While the Cello Concerto is a deeply intimate, melancholy composition, far removed from pure virtuosity, the Overture, Scherzo and Finale was described by the composer as a light, pleasant work expressing profound happiness. So please don’t worry – the atmosphere of joyous celebration emanating from Strauss’s works will last throughout our New Year matinee, clouded for just a moment by a hint of reflection.
